MSC @ COP27

Global Action That Sticks: The Way Forward on Climate Security

The Munich Security Conference hosted multiple event formats on November 8-9, 2022, alongside the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Two high-level panel discussion could be followed live on this website.

At COP27, the MSC aimed to provide relevant stakeholders with a platform to discuss the steps ahead at the nexus of climate and foreign and security policy. The different event formats included two high-level panel discussions that could be followed live on this site. The events brought together representatives from politics, business, media and civil society, allowing for a diversity of debates on- and off-the-record as well as on- and offline, and were hosted in cooperation with selected partners of the MSC.

Climate Change and International Security

If international climate action is not to become a casualty of geopolitical tensions and great-power competition, it is critical to forge more robust climate cooperation that can withstand political and economic upheavals. The transatlantic partners must lead in shaping such durable cooperation. The current revitalization of transatlantic unity has opened a window of opportunity to move forward on a long list of to-dos, and joint climate measures area priority. A key transatlantic goal must also be concerted efforts by the broader Global North to deepen climate partnerships with the Global South. Expectations are high for the Global North to live up to its special responsibility in supporting the energy transition and climate adaptation and mitigation in the Global South. COP27 presented a crucial opportunity for bringing together the international community in pursuit of deep and durable cooperation that can “stick” in a turbulent global environment.
