MSC hosts Munich Leaders Meeting in Nairobi (October 15–16, 2023)
Following its Munich Leaders Meeting (MLM) on the eve of the G7 Summit in Japan in May, the Munich Security Conference (MSC) now turns to Nairobi where it will host this year’s second MLM in close cooperation with the Government of Kenya. Held under the patronage of President William Ruto and in partnership with several key organizations from across the continent, the event will bring together a selected group of around 75 high-level participants from all over the world to discuss Africa’s role in global affairs.
The MLM in Nairobi
After bringing together European and North American leaders with their counterparts in the Indo-Pacific region in Tokyo earlier this year, the MSC crosses the Indian Ocean, hoping to connect transatlantic and African decision-makers. Participants include heads of government as well as ministers from across the African continent, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia as well as high-ranking representatives of International Organizations and the broader security community.
The MLM in Nairobi is part of the MSC’s broader efforts to intensify dialogue with countries beyond the transatlantic realm and explore avenues for stronger cooperation. In light of aggressive revisionism and increasing geopolitical fragmentation, it is paramount to develop a positive vision of the international rules-based order that more countries can subscribe to. African perspectives are indispensable in shaping this vision and effectively addressing regional and global security challenges.
Among other topics, the MLM will address the revitalization of global multilateralism, the redesign of global governance models and the international financial architecture, the future of security cooperation on and with the continent, as well as joint approaches to terrorism and organized crime, climate and energy partnerships, and ways to counter food insecurity and other structural hurdles to unleashing Africa’s full potential.
The MSC is proud to cooperate with several of Africa’s leading security platforms such as the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, and the Gigiri Forum. Once again, the Deutsche Welle will serve as the MSC’s media partner. The event is supported by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the Rockefeller Foundation, and BMW.

About Munich Leaders Meetings
Munich Leaders Meetings bring together an exclusive group of up to 75 high-level participants to discuss current foreign and security policy challenges with particular emphasis on a specific regional context. Meetings take place once or twice a year in different capitals around the world – most recently in Tokyo, Bucharest, and Washington DC. Debates are being held off-the-record and/or under Chatham House rule with a limited group of participants. The event will not be streamed live. Munich Leaders Meetings enable an open and interactive exchange among high-level decision-makers and senior experts from around the globe. At the margins of the MLM, the MSC regularly hosts selected special formats, including Roundtable discussions, to bring together an intimate group for an interactive debate on a specific security policy challenge.
