MSC hosts Nightcap on National Security Strategies at German Forum on Security Policy

On May 3, 2021, the Munich Security Conference will host a Nightcap on Germany's national security strategies at the German Forum on Security Policy. Boris Ruge, Vice-Chairman of the MSC, will discuss with representatives from the United States and the United Kingdom their countries' national security strategies and what Germany could learn from them.

In its 2020 "Zeitenwende" report on German foreign policy, the Munich Security Conference (MSC) made the case for a step change in our “strategic culture”. Among other measures, the MSC argued for a national strategy document to be submitted regularly by the German government, as is the case among all important allies and partners. Such a document and annual interim reports, MSC argued, could provide a basis for informed debate in the Bundestag, thereby promoting awareness and understanding of the key challenges among the broader public.

Both the US and the UK governments regularly put forward such national security documents. As senior officials, Nadia Schadlow and Angus Lapsley were both directly involved in producing the 2017 US National Security Strategy and the 2021 UK Integrated Review, respectively. We look forward to insights from Washington and London and possible lessons for policymaking in Germany.
