On November 17, more than 60 alumni of theMunich Young Leaders(MYL), a joint program of the Munich Security Conference and the Körber-Stiftung, gathered for a virtual discussion event. Under the headline "MYL Around the World: Zoom in on the United States", the MYL alumni discussed with guest speaker Chris Murphy, US Senator from Connecticut and Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. The talk revolved around the political situation in the US post-election and the foreign policy challenges facing the incoming Biden administration. A focal point was the involvement of the United States in multilateral cooperation – a central theme of the MYL program.

The MYL include current and potential leaders in governmental institutions, parliaments, think tanks, the media, and the private sector from all over the world. Accordingly, the dialogue between Murphy and the alumni covered a wide range of issues from climate change to anti-corruption – as well as regional issues from the Balkans, to the Middle East, to Southeast Asia. With a view to the future of US foreign policy as a whole, the discussion revealed that the Biden administration will need to deal with domestic challenges in order to again take a credible leading role on the world stage – while also committing to strengthening international partnerships and alliances. At the conclusion of the event, alumni had the opportunity to talk in an informal and personal setting and thus cultivate long-standing acquaintances from around the world.
