Munich Young Leaders discuss the role of the Middle East and Afghanistan in the world
On November 30, 2021, the Munich Security Conference and Körber-Stiftung hosted the fourth virtual discussion event with members of this year’s cohort and alumni of their joint "Munich Young Leaders" program. More than 40 participants from all over the world discussed the various security challenges the Middle East and Afghanistan are facing.
The Munich Young Leaders (MYL), a joint program of the Munich Security Conference and Körber-Stiftung, include current and potential leaders in governmental institutions, parliaments, think tanks the media and the private sector. More than 40 MYL came together on November 30, 2021 for a virtual discussion event, titled "MYL Around the World: Zoom in on the Middle East and Afghanistan". Together with guest speaker Barham Salih, President of the Republic of Iraq, they discussed current challenges but also opportunities for the region in the drastically changing world.
President Salih started off the event with a keynote speech focusing on the internal politics in Iraq after the parliamentary elections and Iraq’s role in the region.
The second part of the event was structured into two "breakout-sessions" where participants could discuss one of two topics in more detail: the humanitarian and political situation in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of international troops and the current state of negotiations on the JCPOA in light of the new presidency in Iran.
