The MSC is looking for Junior Ambassadors 2020
In the run-up to the 56th Munich Security Conference, the MSC is announcing its eighth Junior Ambassadors essay contest. Inviting the authors of the three best essays to Munich, the contest aims to give dedicated students and young professionals between 18 and 28 the unique opportunity to participate in the Munich Security Conference.
Honoring the memory of Vice-Admiral Ulrich Weisser, the scholarships of the Junior Ambassadors program have been awarded since his death in 2013. Vice-Admiral Weisser was Head of the Policy Planning Staff at the German Ministry of Defense from 1992 to 1998, author of many books and articles on security and defense issues, and one of Germany’s leading strategic thinkers of the past decades.
Essay topic
Like the United States of America in December 2018, in July 2019, France announced a new Space Defense Strategy, framed as a response to the growing military space investments by China and Russia. Globally, the proliferation of technologies like anti-satellite weapons can be observed.
Elaborate on the tactical and strategic implications of these developments. Which challenges and opportunities regarding the outer space do you see for the international community? How can the risk of an arms race and the further weaponization of outer space be mitigated? Formulate concrete policies.
Terms
The contest is open to students and young professionals between 18 and 28 (at the time of the conference). The deadline for entries is Friday, 29 November 2019, at 11.59 p.m. CET. Submissions must not be longer than 3,500 characters (including spaces) and must be written in English. Core criteria for the assessment are the strength of the arguments, as well as the originality and creativity of the ideas.
To participate, please send your essay as a PDF or Word file via e-mail (juniorambassadors@securityconference.de). Please also submit a short CV and the registration form (117 KB).
Only entries that are received before the deadline and that are complete will be eligible for the competition. The MSC will only notify those contestants that have been selected.
Prizes
The three winners will be invited to the Munich Security Conference, held from February 14 to 16, 2020, at Hotel Bayerischer Hof. We expect the Junior Ambassadors to be willing to share their conference impressions via our website and social media from their perspective as the youngest conference attendees. The MSC will cover the travel expenses and will provide accommodation at a conference hotel. Moreover, the winning short pieces will be published on our website.
