Christoph Heusgen elected as Chairman of the Munich Security Conference

At the suggestion of long-time MSC Chairman Wolfgang Ischinger, the Foundation Council of the Munich Security Conference elected Dr. Christoph Heusgen as the future chairman of the Munich Security Conference. The transfer of office is planned for after the Munich Security Conference in 2022. Ambassador Ischinger remains President of the Foundation Council.

The Munich Security Conference is soon led by a new chairman

The Foundation Council of the Munich Security Conference has elected Ambassador Dr. Christoph Heusgen, long-time foreign policy advisor to Chancellor Angela Merkel and former German Ambassador to the United Nations, as the future chairman of the Munich Security Conference. The election took place unanimously and in line with the suggestion of the current chairman, Ambassador Prof. Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Ischinger.

Ischinger, who assumed the chairmanship of the MSC in 2008, stressed that a new generation must now take over the leadership of the world's leading forum for debating international security policy: "I am delighted to have found a successor in Christoph Heusgen, who, after many years as a foreign policy advisor in the Federal Chancellery and then as UN Ambassador in New York, has excellent networks worldwide and is highly regarded as an expert."

Heusgen thanked the Foundation Council for its trust: "I look forward to the exciting task at the top of the Munich Security Conference. It is a great honor for me to take over the legacy of Ewald von Kleist, the unforgettable founder of "Wehrkunde", Horst Teltschik, Helmut Kohl's confidant, and Wolfgang Ischinger, who developed the MSC over the past 13 years into the world's most important forum for debates on foreign, security and defense policy. As president of the Foundation Council, he will continue to contribute his unique experience to the Munich Security Conference, whose 60th founding anniversary we will celebrate in 2023."

The transfer of office is planned for after the upcoming Munich Security Conference in February 2022.
