MSC hosts Munich Leaders Meeting in Rio de Janeiro (November 19 – 21, 2024)

Following its Munich Leaders Meeting (MLM) in Nairobi last year, the Munich Security Conference (MSC) now turns to Rio de Janeiro where it will host this year’s MLM. The event will bring together a selected group of more than 75 high-level participants from all over the world to discuss ways to unlock cooperation potential with Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) countries.

The Munich Leaders Meeting in Rio de Janeiro

Just two weeks after the US elections and immediately after the G20 Summit, the MLM takes place at a crucial juncture. It aims to address pressing security issues, build on the G20 outcomes, and connect LAC decision makers and experts with their counterparts in Europe, the US, and beyond. Participants include heads of government and ministers from various LAC countries and Europe, as well as high-ranking representatives of international organizations and the broader security community.

This year’s MLM in Rio de Janeiro is a central pillar of the MSC’s efforts to intensify dialogue with LAC countries. The Munich Security Conference is committed to forging a broader coalition that develops a more inclusive vision of a rules-based international order that allows everyone to gain. In the face of rising revisionism and geopolitical tensions, it is paramount to promote dialogue on different perspectives on the global order and potential ways to reform the multilateral system. LAC countries’ perspectives are indispensable in shaping this vision and effectively addressing regional and global security challenges.

The MLM will address fundamental questions of global governance reform, increasing mutually beneficial economic cooperation, and strengthening democracy as well as shared challenges such as organized crime, food security, the energy transition, and health security. The sessions will also provide a space to discuss issues with a stronger regional dimension, including climate cooperation in the Amazon, regional perspectives on the US elections, maritime security in the South Atlantic, and diplomatic efforts in the region.

The MSC is proud to cooperate with a variety of organizations in the host region and beyond, including the Brazilian G20 presidency and Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI). The event is supported by the Boston Consulting Group and BMW.

About the Munich Leaders Meetings

Munich Leaders Meetings bring together an exclusive group of more than 75 high-level participants to discuss current foreign and security policy challenges with particular emphasis on a specific regional context. Meetings take place once or twice a year in different cities around the world – most recently in Nairobi, Tokyo, Bucharest, and Washington DC. Debates are being held off-the-record and/or under Chatham House rule with a limited group of participants. The event will not be streamed live. Munich Leaders Meetings enable an open and interactive exchange among high-level decision-makers and senior experts from around the globe. At the margins of the MLM, the MSC regularly hosts selected special formats, including Roundtable discussions, to bring together an intimate group for an interactive debate on a specific security policy challenge.
