Outcome document by the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding (CCCPA)

The Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) hosted a roundtable titled: “Shifting Tides: Towards the Next Generation of African-Led Peace Operations” during the 61st Munich Security Conference on 14 February 2025. The discussion focused on the evolving role of African-led peace operations, emphasizing stronger international partnerships, financial sustainability, and the importance of integrating peacebuilding efforts in peace operations.

Speakers highlighted Africa’s increasing leadership in crisis response, underscoring challenges such as funding and command structures. The transition from the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) was discussed as a model for future missions, prioritizing targeted support, and phased drawdowns.

Participants stressed the need for better coordination among regional security forces, sustainable financing mechanisms, and stronger AU-UN collaboration, that goes beyond financial support. External geopolitical factors were acknowledged as contributors to instability, reinforcing the importance of African-driven security frameworks.

The roundtable concluded that lasting peace requires a comprehensive strategy, balancing security efforts with economic development, youth empowerment, and state building. Strengthening African-led peace operations will depend on predictable funding, strategic partnerships and a long-term commitment to regional stability.
