Task Force Report by the Council on Foreign Relations
Securing Space: A Plan for U.S. Action
Space is crucial to the United States, underpinning modern life and national security. Satellites enable GPS navigation, crop management, and military communications. The U.S. leads in space assets, with companies like SpaceX revolutionizing the sector. However, China and Russia are advancing their capabilities, posing threats to U.S. satellites through electronic warfare and anti-satellite missiles. Space congestion and debris further complicate the situation, increasing collision risks.
The U.S. must act to protect its space assets, manage space traffic, and integrate commercial insights into policy to maintain its strategic position.
